Uruguay ended the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019 group stage with a 100 per cent record after earning a 2-0 victory against New Zealand in Lodz.
Both sides went into their final group encounter already assured of Round of 16 berths and sought to rest players because of it; New Zealand making nine changes, and Uruguay eight, to the teams that ran out on Monday.
La Celeste looked the more threatening side going forward in the first half and their pressure was rewarded five minutes before the break when Darwin Nunez’s powerful strike got the better of goalkeeper Cameron Brown. It was the first goal the Junior All Whites had conceded at Poland 2019.
Uruguay then sealed the deal in second-half injury-time through Brian Rodriguez, ensuring the South Americans signed off the group stage in style with three wins out of three.
